Cupw anonce national strike
Today November 15th, Canada Post started STRIKE. This morning when i drop off my package, there were workers of Canada post standing in the wind. Some of us at first may feel upset and frustrated with shipping delays especially during the holiday season considering the rising cost of shipping and it is understandable to feel frustrated when most of us are buying online. However, have we thought of how much we are paying in Canada compared to our neighbours in the USA? We all know how expensive it is the living in Canada since Pandemic happened.
While we may feel the impact of inflation, it's important to recognize the efforts of workers like those ladies. They deserve our understanding and support, especially as they strive for fair wages amidst rising living costs. By showing kindness and patience, we can contribute to a more positive and supportive community.

Lower Similkameen Indian Band would (again) like to thank our neighbours with the Keremeos Volunteer Fire Department, BC EHS Keremeos paramedics, the RCMP Keremeos detachment assistant, & our I.P.S. constable. When needed, they respond to assist us, and we are grateful for this. We also want to thank those who stopped and helped the injured. This entire paragraph is the definition of “community”.

BC Tree Fruits, 88-year-old co-op, files for liquidation.
BC Tree Fruits, a century-old cooperative, abruptly shuttered its doors in July 2024. A mainstay for over 300 fruit growers, the cooperative succumbed to a perfect storm of challenges. Severe weather conditions decimated fruit yields, while intensifying market competition squeezed profit margins. The financial strain proved insurmountable. This sudden closure has thrown the agricultural community into turmoil, as farmers grapple with finding new markets for their crops. As the cooperative's assets are liquidated, concerns mount about the future of BC's fruit industry and its broader economic implications. No takeover plans confirmed. The closure of BC Tree Fruits has far-reaching impacts. Farmers face economic hardship as they scramble to find new markets for their produce. The local economy suffers from job losses and reduced agricultural revenue. Consumers may experience higher fruit prices due to supply chain disruptions. Long-term, the closure threatens the sustainability of BC's fruit industry, impacting growers, workers, and communities alike. written on july29 , 2024

The LSIB said it experienced “significant barriers to communication” during the incidents, related to cell service. LSIB assured the community they are actively working on solutions to enhance communication. Despite these challenges, LSIB's commitment to assisting neighbors and collaborating with local agencies remained dedicated. The cause of both fires is currently under investigation.

Highway 3 Cawston ablaze again
The dry and hot conditions in Cawston have led to another fast-moving grass fire near Daily Dr. This morning's blaze, tackled by 11 firefighters and multiple vehicles, was contained within an hour but is currently under investigation. This is the second grass fire within a 2 km stretch of this highway, highlighting the increased fire risk in the region. Residents are urged to exercise caution and be mindful of fire safety during this dry season. During this dry season, it's crucial to be extra cautious with fire. The hot and dry conditions increase the risk of wildfires spreading rapidly. Avoid any outdoor burning, properly dispose of cigarettes, and ensure all equipment and vehicles are well-maintained to prevent sparks. Be aware of local fire bans and restrictions, and have an emergency plan in place. By taking these precautions, we can all do our part to prevent devastating fires and keep our communities safe.

BC 2024 GRAPE HARVEST WIPED OUT BY COLD SNAP
A devastating cold snap in January 2024 has decimated the entire grape crop in British Columbia. Record low temperatures swept across the province, leaving vineyards and wineries reeling from the unprecedented loss. The extreme cold caused irreversible damage to grapevines, wiping out the anticipated 2024 harvest.
This catastrophic event has left winemakers with no grapes to process for the upcoming year, dealing a severe blow to the BC wine industry. The impact is far-reaching, with potential long-term consequences for grape growers, wineries, and related businesses. Many are now facing financial hardship and uncertainty about the future. The loss of the 2024 crop also serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of agriculture to extreme weather events. As climate change continues to bring unpredictable weather patterns, the need for adaptation and resilience in the agricultural sector becomes increasingly critical. written by Eric Gauthier
